Korda Studios

Less than 20 miles outside of Budapest in the sprawling countryside, Korda Studios is an ideal location for crews, talent, and stars coming from the capital. Today, the film park hosts six state-of-the-art sound stages, covering 15,000 sqm and including one of the biggest in the world, nearly 3,000 sqm of production accommodations, close to 7,000 sqm of warehouse and workshop space, and a 37-acre backlot for productions to build whatever set movie crews may require.

But what Korda Studios is most famous for—and why visitors come to take a tour—is its 25 acres housing complete mock-ups of the streets of New York (or other cities), a Renaissance town, and a Medieval village. Photos don't quite do the areas justice, but take a browse below and plan a visit if you're in Budapest. The tour guides are full of information on the history of the man behind the film park's name, Alexander Korda. Korda was born in Hungary and was the first filmmaker to be knighted. He escaped Hungary after being held under house arrest during the White Terror, as he had made propaganda films for Communist revolutionary Béla Kun. Korda then worked as a producer, director, and screenwriter in Europe and Hollywood and was known for being one of the first in the movie industry to focus on the international film market.

Korda Studios has hosted a long list of international productions, including Blade Runner 2049, Robin Hood: Origins, The Borgias, National Geographic's Picasso, and Arnold Schwarzenegger's upcoming Terminator (2019).

FYI The tour also includes some fun explanations and interactions with production techniques including visual effects and the use of green screens. Some of the details of the outdoor sets are rather impressive. Given Korda's resources, versatility, and available talent, it's no surprise more and more production companies like filming there.
