Gerecse Landscape

Protection Area

The turul (seen below first line center) is a legendary bird that was a symbol of Hungary's sovereignty and divinity of the kings of the Turul Dynasty (later referred to as Árpád). Three of these massive statues were placed around Greater Hungary, the borders of which were drastically reduced post-Trianon. This is the only one of the three still standing and features a wingspan of 15 meters; it stands atop a mountain near Tatabánya in the Gerecse preserve. There are numerous smaller Turul statues throughout Hungary, including at the Castle District in Budapest, and the region, including Transylvania, Slovakia, Austria, and Serbia.
